Competitive Exams for Students

1. NTSE-NATIONAL TALENT SEARCH EXAMINATION

NTSE is an activity organized by NCERT for students of various classes. It is one of the most popular examinations conducted in India. NTSE was established in 1961. It is a scholarship program.

ELIGIBILITY

Conducted for class-X students only.

SYLLABUS

NCERT prescribed syllabus to be followed. It covers science, math, social science and mental ability.

It has two stages of selection procedures.

2. KVPY–KISHORE VAIGYANIC PROTSAHAN YOJANA

KVPY was started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The main agenda of this exam is to encourage students to take up research in the fields of basic science, engineering and medicine.

ELIGIBILITY

Students in class-XI and class-XII of recognized institutions.

SYLLABUS

Subjects and curriculum of CBSE and ICSE boards.

SELECTION PROCESS

STAGE I: The first stage is the aptitude exam. Eligible candidates are chosen from the received applications and are called for an aptitude exam.

STAGE II: Interview round. Based on the performance of the aptitude exam shortlisted students will be appearing for the interview round. This is the final selection process.

3. HBBVS–DR.HOMI BHABHA BAL VAIDYANIK SPARDHA

HBBVS was initiated by the Mumbai Science Teachers Association in 1981. The main aim of this exam is to search for science talents in students and to encourage them to take an interest in science.

ELIGIBILITY

Only students studying class VI and class IX can take this exam.

SYLLABUS

The exam covers the subjects and topics covered in the curriculum up to class VI and class IX.

SELECTION PROCESS

STAGE I: Written-test

STAGE II: Practical skill test

FINAL STAGE: Oral test i.e. the interview and submission of action research report.

4. NSO–NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

NSO is a national-level science exam conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). NSO rankings will be allotted based on the marks obtained.

ELIGIBILITY

Students of class I to class XII are eligible to participate.

SYLLABUS

Science and math syllabus as prescribed by CBSE, ICSE or various state boards.

SELECTION PROCESS

There will be four levels of exams. First will be within the school, at the city-state level and above all, at the international level.

5. UCO–UNIFIED CYBER OLYMPIAD

The Unified Council conducts UCO every year. UCO is a test that helps students improve their mental ability, logical reasoning and computer skills.

ELIGIBILITY

Students in class III to class XII of recognised schools are eligible.

Subjects are more generic and are suitable for CBSE, ICSE and state boards.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection is done in two stages.

Math’s Talent Search Exam (MTSE) is a competitive exam conducted by the Indian Institute for Studies in Mathematics (IISMA). Mental ability, mathematical reasoning, accuracy and speed are the main focus of this examination.

8. NSEJS- NATIONAL STANDARD EXAM IN JUNIOR SCIENCE

14. Geo Genius

Today, among most of the students, Science and Maths have become the subjects of interest, making them unaware of the geographical facts about the world. Thus to cultivate the understanding of Geography among the school students, Geo Genius was established. Students from Class II to XII are eligible for these exams. This test is conducted in two phases. In Phase I, children participate in their respective schools throughout the country and then based on the cut-off, students are selected for Phase II where they are invited to the National Finals.

17. National Biotechnology Olympiad or NBO

NBO is conducted for classes I to XII to enhance the student’s knowledge about Biotechnology issues and to test their aptitude for taking up a career in Biotechnology in future. The test comprises 50 questions for 50 marks.

18. Assessment of Scholastic Skills Through Educational Testing (ASSET)

ASSET, meant for the students of classes III-X, uses multiple-choice questions to focus on measuring how well skills and concepts underlying the school syllabus have been understood by the students thus breaking the concept of rote learning. The test is mainly based on the CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, and major state boards’ curriculum.
